Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital staff would have been happy with a brief meet and greet but Keith Thurman cared too much for that type of appearance. He wanted to give his all for brave children receiving potentially life-saving medical treatment.

Keith Thurman, 2x Welterweight World Champion, spent 3.5 hours talking to and brightening the spirits of Kids with Cancer. The children, parents and staff were clearly choked up while listening to his heartfelt, inspirational remarks. Lydia, an executive with the hospital, reflects “Keith is so engaging, he really connected with our patients in a special way. The tears were flowing when he said to several patients ‘You have a champion’s heart. You are a champion.’ Letting several patients ‘knock him out’ were incredible moments, too. The caregiving team commented repeatedly how uplifting his visit was for everyone on the unit.”

Too often, news outlets focus on the inhumanity in our world. Keith’s time spent at All Children’s reflected the spirit of caring, sincere kindness and human decency from a true sports legend.
